Piriformis Stretch

Piriformis Stretch

In this video, Dr. Dee and Jessie from First Choice Chiropractic demonstrate a seated piriformis stretch that may help relieve sciatic-type discomfort.

The piriformis is a deep hip muscle that helps rotate your hip outward. When it becomes tight, often from prolonged sitting or crossing your legs, it can irritate the sciatic nerve and contribute to pain that travels down the back of your leg.

To perform the stretch, you sit upright, cross one ankle over the opposite knee, gently press the raised knee downward, and hinge forward from your hips until you feel a stretch through your glute and outer hip. Hold the stretch for about 30 seconds, relax into it, and repeat on both sides.

If the stretch causes pain, stop. Sciatica can come from the piriformis, the low back, or another source, so Dr. Dee or Dr. Geskie with First Choice Chiropractic can help determine what is causing your symptoms and whether this stretch is right for you.
